Analysis and Design of Adding On
Meier's Smith House, located in Darien, CT, sits on the northern coast of the Long Island Sound. Meier took great advantage of this home's location by encasing the south face of the house in glass. Natural light floods into the space, illuminating its voided space. Beautiful sunsets and sunrises are captured each day as the undisturbed view is welcomed into the home. Meier's repeated use of structure and mass/void typologies create a well-established and appreciated architectural vernacular that can be studied and expanded upon. This project explores Meier's established techniques in order to create an addition on the home that does not take away from his original design, but ties into it seamlessly.

The Smith family is a young family that has decided to buy their dream house, the Meier house, on the Long Island Sound. Mr. and Mrs. Smith love to entertain and have family and friends over to celebrate any and every holiday. Therefore, a welcoming family room will be added to their house as well as an outdoor entertaining space. However, at the end of the day they deeply enjoy their downtime together as a married couple. All of those gatherings and their two children can cause some stress, so alone time is necessary. Upon buying their home, they plan to expand their master suite to include a luxurious ensuite bathroom and fitness room. Mr. Smith enjoys working out in the early mornings, enjoying the sunrise before heading out to work in Manhattan. Meanwhile, Mrs. Smith enjoys a long bath and watching the sunset after a long day of staying home with the kids. They both love watching the rising and setting of the sun, therefore continued sprawling views of the horizon in their relaxing spaces is a must.
